Call for submissions

CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS

Introduction

Over the last sixteen years Globe Gallery has been exploring new ways of bringing cutting edge contemporary art to audience of all kinds in the North of England. It has recently launched the successful Globe Gallery OFFSITE, a new programme of exhibitions, events and participatory projects to breathe creativity into disused shops and empty spaces.

For the next OFFSITE project Globe Gallery is requesting submissions by contemporary visual artists to participate in an exhibition at Think Tank, an ex pottery unit at the Hoults Yard, Newcastle, in October 2010. All artworks should be available for sale.

The exhibition aims to provide an important platform for cutting edge contemporary art and to support the organisation’s programme of exhibitions and participatory projects.

Yvette Hawkins – Nothing to Read Here

home

Unit 14, Keel Row Shopping Centre, Blyth, Northumberland
Wednesday 10th March to Saturday 4th April 2010
EXHIBITION VISIBLE DURING SHOPPING CENTRE OPENING HOURS

Following the hugely successful Their Silence, A Language show at Globe City gallery, we are proud to present Yvette Hawkins new installation Nothing to Read Here.  The exhibition will be accompanied by a series of open workshops for local residents who will get the chance to work with Yvette and devise their own book sculpture.

Reopening a retail premises as a temporary art installation redefines the rules, creating a different type of ‘public’ space focusing on engagement and interaction rather than consumption.

As the title alludes, Nothing to Read Here plays with concepts of viewing and reading inherent in Hawkins’ work.  Whilst her beautiful book sculptures cannot be read, they are presented as objects to be viewed, interacted with and experienced.

Nothing to Read Here takes place in the empty Adams store in the middle of Keel Row shopping centre in the Northumbrian coastal port of Blyth.  Building upon the CRUNCH! Show at Monument Mall, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, the project is the next stage of Globe’s ongoing series of creating temporary contemporary art venues in empty shops and derelict spaces around the region.  We believe that truly accessible and engaging contemporary art can be taken out of the gallery into more familiar locations.  More shows and locations will be announced soon.

Yvette Hawkins is an artist and writer from Newcastle upon Tyne.  She makes tactile, engaging and textural sculptures and installations that transform everyday useable and familiar materials into objects that explore suggestion and secrecy.  Her socially engaging practice concerns physical acts, encouraging viewers to become conscious of their surroundings by subtly controlling and manipulating their senses.

There will be a series of community workshops to accompany the exhibition.

Check our volunteering opportunities page for a range of ways you can help out and get involved!

CRUNCH!

crunchnews

In partnership with Globe Gallery, The Sponsors Club for Arts and Business and NE1

Crunch! is the culmination of an exciting shop window participatory arts project that began in June 2009. Over 100 participants worked with Viz co-creator Simon Donald and playwright Lee Mattinson to produce their own responses to the credit crunch. Participants ranged from local school children aged 13 to a retired pensioner aged 67, proving that art can be accessible to everyone. The results are amazingly varied, with cartoons from several of the participants as well as from Simon and Chris Donald, and script produced by the volunteers and edited by Lee Mattinson.

The works will be installed in all available shop windows at the old Boots store in Monument Mall. CRUNCH comes in the 30th anniversary year of Viz Comic and what better way to celebrate local talent which has been such a phenomenal success and an inspiration to many budding illustrators and cartoonists..

The Crunch! launch will begin at 2pm on the 17th December 2009 at Monument.  Simon and Chris Donald, Lee Mattinson, and representatives from NE1, the Arts Council, and The Sponsors Club for Arts and Business will open the windows along with our volunteers.

The project is supported by:

Viz creator to get young people creating credit-crunch cartoons

CRUNCH! Art and humour hits the high street
Your chance to work with Simon Donald and Lee Mattinson to express your experiences of life in Credit Crunch-hit Britain…

Globe Gallery invites you to take part in a community-based art project that will reawaken your local high street during this credit crunch stand still.

With the collaboration of Viz co-creator Simon Donald, playwright Lee Mattinson and anyone who wants to get involved, we are planning to produce a series of new works that will provide a typically northern, humourous take on global economic issues and show the resilience of the north to withstand these tough times.

Participants will be challenged to create a storyline and develop characters through a series of workshops. The scenes created will be presented in empty shop windows in Newcastle City Centre by August and there will be an exhibition of all the participant’

s work at Globe Hub in North Shields.

All workshops take place in Globe Hub Gallery, 97 Howard Street, North Shields, NE30 1NA. All workshops start at 11am to 4pm.
