Yvette Hawkins Workshop

In preparation for our upcoming exhibition, Yvette Hawkins held a workshop for us in the gallery. Yvette is a book artist whose practice involves intricate paper folding. She has been involved with the Globe for many years and was our previous supported artist.

This part of the exhibition will involve 43 sculptures made from maps, so we've got a few extra hands to help get the piece ready for the opening.

Homelands at the Riverside Community Health Project, Benwell

As part of our volunteer programme, we aim to visit different galleries/ exhibitions each week. Last week we went to see Zuzana Hruskova and Marek Šulík's exhibition Homelands at the Riverside project in Benwell. North East based Solvakian artist Zuzana Hruskova and Bratislava based filmmaker Marek Sulik have been working closely with Solvak/Czech/Roma community in the west end of Newcastle. We were lucky enough to meet Zuzana and hear her discuss the project. The exhibit will be moving to the Discovery Museum, opposite the Globe soon. We recommend a visit.

Here is our new volunteering area to help with all our up coming events and projects.

We have a new cutting area being used by Our new volunteer Penny.


Say hello to Monica how is making use of the new cutting area.

We are up and running and now open Wednesday through to Saturday after a fantastic opening night with a great turn out.

We have a great new exhibit from artist Angus Braithwaite as part of the Fast Forward show. His image 'The Moment of Conception' graces the front of our building and we even had some T-shirts made to advertise the show. Here are some of our volunteers modeling them.

A fond farewell

We have said a fond farewell to Sam and Maddy last week, we’ll miss his physiological chats on painting. We have a new face at the globe a big hello to Leah who has been helping out with the promotion of the up coming events.

This week is all go as we get ready for the arts fair at the sage. Building work is still ongoing but we are now painting anything and every thing white.

From grime to glamour

Renovation is in full swing on all floors of the gallery. To create a welcoming environment for disabled guests the once gloomy basement entrance has been cleaned up, the walls painted white, and the floor in non-slip grey.

In anticipation of a series of upcoming events both the ground and top floor gallery spaces continue to undergo a revival. On the top floor the walls are being painted white, and on the ground floor the fermacell boards are being made ready for hanging.

We have continued renovating the volunteer space. A blackboard has been added to the first floor giving volunteers a space to map out ideas.

This week we began making over the first floor of our new gallery in Blandford Square. The space will be used as an area for volunteers to work on projects and catalogue past exhibitions. We began the room's 'new look' by putting together a montage of flyers and posters to create a visual link between the new gallery space and our previous Globe location.

Investors in Globe fundraising event a massive success!

Thanks to everyone who came along to our opening event on Friday 15th April. More than 450 visitors came along with many investing time, skills, equipment and money to become Investors in Globe.

Franko B performed for more than 2 hours in our main gallery space, mesmerising the audience. Paul Grimmer's video installation brought serenity to the back stair well whilst Richard Phipps' perpetually spinning roulette wheel immersed viewers in a disused safe. Chris Dreier and Frank Lohmeyer brought an array of credit crunch related installations, tapestries and a brilliant video from Berlin.

Ben Jeans Houghton and up-and-coming film maker Kiron Hussein created two deeply atmospheric video installations in the basement. Thanks also to the 7 artists who designed our limited edition Investment Certificates: Ant Macari; Antonio Riello; Alexander Gorlizki; Ben Jeans Houghton; Chris Donald; Chris Dreier; and Helen Edling. Music for the evening was provided by Marc Oliver and John Egdell.

The event was made possible thanks to the efforts of all our staff and board members as well as our new, current and many ex-volunteers and friends of the gallery. We are also grateful to Locus+ and Vane for their support in the run up to the event. This really was a moment of renewal for Globe. A truly collective effort.
