The Monster Club
Altered Space Fringe
7th - 28th September 2013
The Sage Gateshead’s artist in residence Toby Heaps, internationally renowned for outdoor urban artwork, brought his work indoors for the Altered Space Fringe Event The Monster Club. The white walls of the gallery were treated to Heaps' signature urban landscapes, peopled by the twisted inhabitants of his imagination in a surreal, darkly comic style.
Heaps recently participated in the Tesco-funded Graffiti Gospels, a creative response to the temporary return of the Lindisfarne Gospels painted directly on the walls of the C13th chapel St Edmunds Sanctuary Artspace in Gateshead, with Heaps featuring on BBC’s Songs of Praise. Heaps has a broad portfolio of private and public commissions over a long urban art career spanning almost 30 years, ranging from Kia car adverts, Virgin Media murals and recently the 2012 Cannes Award-winning Guardian newspaper advert ‘The Three Little Pigs’. In the 2012 ‘Great’ tourism campaign launched in Brazil, advertising the best of Britain’s business, sport and culture, Heaps was chosen to paint on the red carpet for Prince Harry’s first public engagement tour. Heaps has worked with spray paint media for over 20 years, working with such prolific art crews TransPennine Nomads (TPN) in Yorkshire, and in Newcastle the much-loved Ghetto Method Crew (GMC).
